Understanding Your Ovulation & Fertile Window
Ovulation is the clinical phase of the menstrual cycle when a mature ovarian follicle ruptures and releases an egg into the fallopian tube for potential fertilization. Knowing your ovulation timeline is crucial for family planning or tracking reproductive cycles.
Calculating the Timeline
Ovulation typically occurs approximately 14 days before the start of the next menstrual cycle. In a standard 28-day cycle, this corresponds to Day 14. Your fertile window spans the 5 days leading up to ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. This is because sperm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while the egg is viable for about 12 to 24 hours after release.
Tracking Menstrual Phases
- Follicular Phase (Pre-ovulation): Follicles mature in the ovaries under the influence of FSH, and estrogen levels rise, thickening the uterine lining.
- Ovulatory Phase: A surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) triggers the release of the egg.
- Luteal Phase (Post-ovulation): The ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, secreting progesterone to support a potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, hormone levels drop, leading to menstruation.
