What is HbA1c?

HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) measures the amount of glucose attached to red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for about 3 months, an HbA1c test reflects your average blood glucose levels over the past 90 days.

The ADAG Formula

This converter utilizes the ADAG (A1c-Derived Average Glucose) formula to translate your HbA1c percentage into Estimated Average Glucose (eAG) in mg/dL and mmol/L. The formula is:

eAG (mg/dL) = (28.7 * HbA1c) - 46.7

While daily finger-prick tests measure blood glucose at a single point, eAG provides a broader view of your average blood sugar levels over time.

Diagnostic Tiers

  • Normal: HbA1c below 5.7%
  • Prediabetes: HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4%
  • Diabetes: HbA1c of 6.5% or higher
