What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation that measures weight relative to height. It is widely used as an initial screening tool to categorize weight status and identify potential health risks associated with underweight, overweight, or obesity.

The Importance of Asian-Specific BMI Limits

Standard WHO criteria classify overweight as a BMI ≥ 25. However, clinical studies show that Asian and Indian populations tend to accumulate higher percentages of visceral abdominal fat at lower BMI levels. This increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease even at a 'normal' weight.

Consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indian consensus guidelines recommend lower BMI thresholds for Asian populations:

  • Underweight: BMI < 18.5
  • Normal Weight: BMI 18.5 – 22.9
  • Overweight: BMI 23.0 – 24.9
  • Obesity: BMI ≥ 25.0

Frequently Asked Questions

Research shows that South Asian populations have a higher body fat percentage and a greater tendency to store fat viscerally (around abdominal organs) at a given BMI, raising cardiovascular and diabetes risks at lower weights.
No, BMI only measures total mass relative to height. It does not distinguish between muscle mass, bone density, and body fat, meaning it may classify highly muscular individuals as overweight.
For Indian adults, consensus guidelines suggest a waist circumference of less than 90 cm (35 inches) for men and less than 80 cm (31 inches) for women to maintain lower metabolic risk.
