Spotting the Primary Motor and Non-Motor Indicators
Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain's substantia nigra.
Primary Motor Symptoms
- Resting Tremor: A rhythmic shaking that typically starts in one hand or finger when relaxed.
- Rigidity: Increased stiffness in muscles, making it difficult to swing arms when walking.
- Bradykinesia: General slowness of movement, requiring extra effort to perform everyday tasks.
Early Non-Motor Warnings
- Loss of sense of smell (anosmia).
- Chronic, severe constipation.
- REM sleep behavior disorder (acting out dreams physically).
Early consult: If you notice a gradual reduction in facial expression (masking) or a shuffling gait, schedule a movement disorder specialist consult.
